How Can a Groomer Help a Nervous Dog?

Some dogs trot happily through the salon door. Others would quite happily turn around and go straight home.

Nervousness around grooming can have many causes, including unfamiliar surroundings, sensitivity to handling, noise, previous experiences or simply the dog's individual temperament.

The answer isn't always to “make them get used to it”. A thoughtful approach begins by recognising that the dog is finding something difficult.

Calm Handling Starts with the Groomer

Dogs pay close attention to the people handling them.

Remaining patient and calm is therefore particularly important when working with an anxious dog.

At Short Bark & Sides, Tracey draws on techniques learned through Reiki training to help herself remain grounded when working with nervous dogs, alongside handling knowledge gained through training with Chirag Patel.

Gentle head and neck massage can help some dogs, although every dog is different.

The Salon Environment Matters

A nervous little dog may find sharing a space with a large, noisy dog overwhelming.

That's why we consider the combination of dogs booked into the salon rather than simply filling every available appointment.

We also don't routinely cage dogs.

What If My Dog Has Been Refused Elsewhere?

Tell us.

Having been refused by another groomer doesn't automatically mean we'll refuse your dog too. Having several groomers means we're sometimes able to provide additional support that isn't practical for someone grooming alone.

However, safety and welfare always come first. Dogs with a bite history or significant behavioural concerns need to be discussed honestly before an appointment.

Sometimes a muzzle may be appropriate and sometimes continuing a groom simply isn't in the dog's best interests.

The important thing is finding the safest and kindest approach for the individual dog. You can read more about how we work with nervous and difficult dogs, or meet the groomers who would be caring for them. When you're ready, get in touch to talk about your dog.
