Regular dental care at home, combined with appropriate professional and veterinary care, can help you keep a closer eye on your dog's oral health.
At Short Bark & Sides, we offer ultrasonic teeth cleaning for suitable dogs, but we always remind owners that what happens between appointments matters too.
Why Home Dental Care Is Important
Plaque doesn't politely wait until your dog's next grooming appointment.
That's why expecting a teeth cleaning session every six weeks to do all the work isn't realistic.
We recommend regular home dental care using suitable products and can supply toothpaste for owners to use between visits. In the week before an ultrasonic cleaning appointment, we may suggest using it daily to help prepare for the session.
What Happens During Ultrasonic Teeth Cleaning?
Our sessions generally last around 25–30 minutes, depending on how comfortable the dog is.
The first appointment costs £35, with subsequent appointments costing £25.
We work calmly and stop when a dog tells us they've had enough. Not every dog is suitable, and some smaller breeds in particular can find the process harder to accept.
When to Speak to Your Vet
Teeth cleaning in a grooming salon is not a replacement for veterinary dental care. If we see signs that could suggest gum disease or another dental problem, we'll stop and recommend you speak to your vet.
Similarly, owners who notice pain, bleeding, swelling, loose or damaged teeth, difficulty eating or other concerning changes should seek veterinary advice rather than waiting for a grooming appointment.
Professional Cleaning Works Best with Good Habits
There's no magic solution that replaces regular care.
A sensible home routine, appropriate grooming salon maintenance for suitable dogs and veterinary dental care when required all have different roles. Read more about our ultrasonic dog teeth cleaning or ask us whether it would suit your dog.
