When Should a Puppy Have Their First Groom?

One grooming myth we'd happily see disappear is that puppies shouldn't visit a groomer until they're six months old.

If you have a breed that will need professional grooming throughout its life, early positive introductions can make future appointments much easier.

Once your puppy has completed the vaccinations necessary for them to safely attend a grooming salon, it's worth discussing puppy grooming with your groomer.

Why Start Puppy Grooming Early?

Imagine being six months old and suddenly experiencing a bath, dryer, clippers, scissors, nail trimming and standing on a grooming table for the first time.

That's a lot to process.

Early puppy appointments allow these experiences to be introduced more gently.

At Short Bark & Sides, we don't expect puppies to behave like experienced adult dogs. We can do a little work, let them have some floor time, play and cuddles, then continue when they're ready.

What Can I Practise at Home?

Get your puppy comfortable with gentle handling.

Touch their paws, ears, legs and tail and introduce regular brushing appropriate for their coat. Keep sessions short and positive rather than waiting until there's a problem.

The goal isn't to turn you into a professional groomer. It's simply to teach your puppy that being handled and brushed is a normal part of life.

Puppy Grooming Is an Investment in Future Grooms

A puppy who learns that grooming is safe, familiar and predictable has a much better foundation for future appointments.

If you've recently welcomed a puppy in Farnham, Aldershot, Tongham, Ash, Mytchett or Farnborough, we'd be happy to help you start their grooming journey. Read more about puppy grooming at Short Bark & Sides or get in touch.
